Cottage (2000 sq. ft.) in Ortonville, MN
0 miles from Big Stone Lake
Welcome to our Modern Cottage Retreat on Big Stone Lake! We hope this is a home where you can find rest and relaxation away from the busyness of life. Whether you come for fishing and boating, ice fishing, a girl's or guy's weekend away, or time with family and friends, we hope you leave feeling refreshed. This space was designed with intentionality to provide everything you need for a relaxing, fun stay at the lake. It was completely remodeled and is like a brand new home so you can relax whether you're inside or outside! There is a master bedroom on the main floor with queen bed, and huge loft upstairs with 2 extra-long twin bunkbeds and 2 queen-size beds. One of the couches in the living room area also includes a pull-out bed! Enjoy making meals in the brand new kitchen and spending time together in this large, remodeled, open-concept space. Curl up with a good book in the sitting area while kids enjoy the spacious space to play upstairs! Accommodations for children: we have 5 children of our own, and so we wanted to make sure that this space made taking kids along as easy as possible. We have provided a pack n play for little ones with extra sheets, a sound machine upstairs, and a portable highchair. We have a few games, puzzles, books, and toys so that you don't have to take any extras along. The beach is even close enough to the house, that you could lay your little ones down, and have a monitor down by the beach while you keep in constant contact with them inside. The upstairs loft is a dream for kids and adults alike, but has enough space to play if you need a bit of separation, with a separate bathroom up there. We also made sure to put a bathtub on the main floor b/c we know how important it is to have a bathtub when trying to bathe little ones. Amenities away from the cottage: If rest and relaxation is what you came for, you won't need to go any further, especially if you enjoy cooking a meal in the fully functional and furnished kitchen. If you need to get out for a bit of exercise, this cottage is on the quietest road that stretches both directions right next to the lake. It is actually inside a state park, and if you want to find more trails to hike, or if you have friends who want to camp, you can go just down the road to Big Stone State Park. There are also a couple trails just feet from our property into the state park. There is a boat ramp about 1/4 mile down the road if you'd like to take a boat along for your stay here. In addition, there are several restaurants nearby if you'd prefer to go out to eat a night or two. Please contact us and we'd be happy to share! There is space for everyone inside, but outside the accommodations are also spectacular! Enjoy the highly sought-after beach area on the property with the excellent shade trees. Feel free to take a ride on the kayaks or paddle board! Finish off the day with a bonfire outside on the new patio by the lake, and curl up in a cozy bed for the evening. This place is truly special with it's modern cottage feel, and we created it to be a pristine space that feels like a true retreat from the chaos of life, so you could enjoy time with the people you love.

House (1100 sq. ft.) in Ortonville, MN
0.1 miles from Big Stone Lake
Please Note: I am pulling into the finish line of my graduate degree, and while I have thoroughly enjoyed having The GuestHouse, it is time for me to reimagine this investment and move on to other things. The house is currently for sale. The asking price is $142,500. Shady Oaks Realty, here in Ortonville, is handling the sale and they have all the pertinent information on the property. I am pausing on reservations due to COVID. Thank you so much for your interest! * Regarding the house: as a local artist and writer, I renovated this 1905 home with high attention to quality interior design. At 1100 ft.², it is an excellent example of small space living. There are two bedrooms and one bath. Enjoy morning or afternoon coffee on the porch. Maple hardwood floors are throughout the living room, dining room, and bedroom. There is air-conditioning, a five-burner stainless steel gas range, microwave, a quality appointed kitchen, reverse osmosis drinking system, a main-floor bedroom with a queen bed, an upstairs bedroom with a full bed, and a pullout living-room couch sleeper. The main floor bathroom includes an old-fashioned cast-iron tub, shower, and a Whirlpool washing machine and dryer. Wireless Internet, a 38” flat screen television with an internet audio and video player (internet access to Netflix, Hulu Plus , You Tube and Pandora), and an ample library of DVDs. The dining room table seats four, but has three extra leaves. The GuestHouse is centrally located in downtown Ortonville, just two houses away from The Ortonville Pier and Lakeside Park, walkable to the library, Lingonberries, a favorite coffee and lunch spot. During the summer, enjoy the Saturday farmer’s market along the lake. I try to use natural cleaning products. Towels and sheets are 100% cotton and are of high quality. I strive to buy organic cotton when I can. Mattresses are encased with a hypo allergic and bed-bug barrier, there are smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, a carbon monoxide alarm, etc. This summer, 2021, I launch my eighth summer season of having The GuestHouse. It amazes me where people come from. I’ve had guests from all over the United States including Hawaii. I have people who come here to see family and reconnect with their roots, people attending weddings, honeymooners, girlfriend getaways, people who want to see what our region is like and explore real estate. I have also attracted people specifically because of this house, which makes me incredibly happy! Because, in the past, The GuestHouse was also an art gallery, I had the opportunity to be a curator, which means I selected the type of show I wanted to have for the season and specific artists. Because I am an artist myself, I am familiar with artists in our region and with their work. No exhibit currently.

The Lincoln House was built in 1895, and was "A Grand Home" when it was first built. Over the years different owners changed things, and of late it has been our labor of love to restore and renovate. Set on two city lots, the yard is large bordered on the west side by lilac bushes and overlooking the foot of Big Stone Lake. Located a block and a half up from the Big Stone County Courthouse, it provides easy access to Ortonville's main business street (2nd St.), and is within walking distance of a few stores, churches, bars/restaurants, grocery store, convenience store, banks and post office. The Ortonville Hospital and Golf Course are minutes away by car. There is a small playground with swings and a slide a two blocks away. As you enter the property you will be in a enclosed porch that spans the entire width of the house, and offers a casual bright social area with views of the foot of Big Stone Lake. Inside is a large living space, also the full width of the house, with a 3/4 bath (including an awesome rain shower) tucked under the stair case. The back of the house offers a large kitchen (fully stocked for preparing and serving meals (you just bring the food), and a dining room that can easily accommodate 8 or more. Upstairs off a bright open hallway are three large bedrooms and a full bath (soon with laundry). One bedroom is set up with two twin beds, and can easily accommodate a pack-n-play (3 are available at the property), Two bedrooms are setup with king size beds, but can easily be split into two XL twin beds if needed. One of these king bedrooms can also easily accommodate a pack-n-play. All the floors in the property have been redone, along with fresh paint, and fixtures through out the house. Seating in the living spaces is plentiful and comfortable. This property is designed and furnished as a place for families to gather and enjoy each other's company. It is also a great house for fishermen, hunters or a gal's getaway weekend. We live very close, so we can be available if/when needed, but leave our guests to enjoy the property in private. Special events (bridal or baby showers for example) will be considered on a case by case basis. Well behaved dogs are welcome (there is a pet fee). We are dog lovers, and we know that even the best dogs can mis-behave when in new circumstances, but that owners love to have their dogs with them when they travel. In order to keep our pet friendly policy in place, we ask owners to please clean up after their furry friends inside and out, respect the neighbors by keeping them on the property and barking to a minimum. We do request that all dogs be kenneled if left alone at the property, and we can provide a kennel if necessary.

**WARNING: On Thursday, March 11th, 2021, we were notified that someone stole the photos and text from our VRBO listing here and created a fake ad on Craigslist!! They are trying to scam people into making a "reservation" for the cabin and then asking them to Venmo them payment, then they disappear with your money. So DO NOT book this property via anyone on Craigslist, as it is not real. IT IS A SCAM!! We only take reservations through this VRBO site. We have reported this fraud to the Traverse County Sheriff's Department, who will be investigating. Sorry for any inconvenience this con artist has caused with this hoax.** Welcome to our year-round cabin, “Dakota View”, on the Minnesota side of Lake Traverse. The name says it all as the cabin features beautiful, scenic views of the South Dakota hills and islands across the lake. Our clean, cute and comfortable cabin is very versatile and a great place for: * Vacationing families of all ages * Groups of fishermen or hunters * Ladies who want to have a “Girls' Getaway Weekend” * Family reunions or get-togethers * Out-of-towners who need lodging for local weddings, class reunions, or holiday gatherings THE CABIN: Built in 2003, our single-story cabin sits on a flat, 75’ wide lot, on a dead-end road, literally just steps from the lake. With over 1,800 square feet, there are four bedrooms and it sleeps up to ten people. * The largest bedroom, "Lake Lookout", has a king-size bed and French doors that open out to the lake and patio area. There's plenty of space for a crib in this room if you have a baby. * The second bedroom, "Valley View", also has a king-size bed. * The third and fourth bedrooms, "Sandy Shores" and "Tall Timbers", each have two twin beds. * There are also two twin hide-a-bed in the living room. Since we know how important it is to have a good night’s sleep, especially when you’re on vacation, all of our bedroom mattresses are brand-name and high quality. We also only use 300 thread-count linens. There are two bathrooms in the cabin – one with a full tub/shower combo and the other with a shower. We also have a washer and dryer to accommodate guests. The fully-equipped, well-appointed kitchen has all the comforts of home, including a dishwasher and microwave. The spacious dining room table seats eight people – the perfect place to eat all those fish you catch! There is seating for two more at the kitchen island. Our favorite part of the cabin is the lakeside living room. It has five huge picture windows, making for breathtaking, panoramic lake views. We have Dish TV (200+ channels) and as well as free Wi-Fi so our guests will be able to stay connected during their stay. Outside the cabin, there’s a Weber gas grill and lakeside fire pit to enjoy after a fun day on the lake. Guests have full use of our dock and boat lift, plus a swimming raft, stand up paddleboards and all the other lake toys we have in the garage like inner tubes, noodles and lifejackets (all available from approximately late April to late September). Please note that the paddle boat you see in the photos was destroyed in a storm in the summer of 2020 so unfortunately we no longer offer that amenity to guests. Sorry for the inconvenience! Please note that we do NOT allow pets but exceptions may be made for hunters who want to bring their hunting dogs, keeping them kenneled in the garage. THE LAKE: Lake Traverse is a highly-regarded walleye lake. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the 2019 survey of the lake averaged 42.83 walleyes per gill net lift (normal range for this class of lake is 3.2-15.3). You fisherman will appreciate what an incredible number that is! Lake Traverse is the 13th largest lake in the state, with nearly 11,000 acres. The lake also has nice numbers of other species for a high quality fishing experience. Because it’s a "Border Water", with the Minnesota/South Dakota state line running right down the middle of the lake, Lake Traverse has special perks that most all other Minnesota lakes don't have: * The fishing season remains OPEN here all year long! Catch walleyes whenever you please and get an early jump on the open water fishing season (no having to wait for the regular Minnesota fishing opener on the second weekend of May) * Lake Traverse also follows South Dakota's regulation that allows you to fish TWO lines at the same time legally. * The daily fish limits are a little different for a few species (most notably, the limit of walleyes per person is four, not six like the rest of the state), so please read up on that prior to your stay in the MN DNR's annual fishing regulations booklet (available where you purchase fishing licenses and we always have a copy available at our cabin as well) Our cabin is conveniently located just a few lots down from one of the lake’s public accesses, which is especially nice for ice fishing or snowmobiling in the winter. In addition to fishing, there is plentiful public hunting land nearby, with dozens of Waterfowl Production Areas and Wildlife Management Areas within a 10-30 minute drive. Wildlife such as deer, pheasants, ducks, geese, and turkeys are abundant in the area. THE LOCATION: Dakota View is located about 10 miles north Browns Valley, MN, 13 miles southwest from Wheaton, MN and 25 miles east of Sisseton, SD. Lake Traverse is just a few miles north of Big Stone Lake, another popular destination in western Minnesota. In terms of bigger cities, it's about: * 3.25 hours from Minneapolis, MN * 1.5 hours from Fargo, ND * 2.5 hours from Sioux Falls, SD Although we're located in a rural/small-town setting, all the basic amenities you need can be found nearby: grocery and hardware stores, restaurants (sit-down and fast food), convenience stores, bait shops, a public outdoor heated swimming pool in Wheaton, a bowling alley, a public nine-hole golf course, plus cute area shops (check out Fuzzy Cheeks Boutique, Gathered Grounds Coffee Shop and Bistro, and Rustic Edge Floral, all located in Wheaton), With The Wind Winery (just south of Rosholt, SD) and Dakota Connection Casino (Sisseton, SD) and Dakota Magic Casino (Hankinson, ND) - all without the craziness that’s typical of the bigger tourist areas. That’s one of the reasons we love it out here so much; it’s peaceful and low-key. We only rent our cabin to those who are responsible, courteous and will leave it in the condition that they found it in. A lot of hard work has gone into our cabin and we ask that guests respect it by treating it as if it were their own home. Thank you for understanding. To book a stay or ask questions about Dakota View, please fill in your information (be sure to include name, phone, e-mail address and a brief message to us - due to spam/scams, incomplete inquiries will not be replied to) and send a request to us. We invite you to stay at Dakota View on scenic Lake Traverse. We’re sure you’ll love it as much as we do. Hope to see you soon!

This 600 sq. ft. cabin has electricity, heat, air conditioning, and an outdoor water spigot, outdoor shower, and a separate toilet room equipped with composting toilet (port-a-potty also available). Quiet, peaceful and tranquil lake home with around 1,500 feet of shoreline that is ready for you and your family to swim, fish, tube, ski and relax in. Simply put, because it sits on more than 50+ acres, it is perhaps the most quiet and peaceful lake home that you could chose for you and your family to enjoy your vacation!!! As I mentioned before we have around 1,500 feet of shoreline with your very own private sandy beach. The cabin itself is an Amish built square log cabin home which consists of two bedroom and a loft and an on demand water heater so you will never run out of hot water... The master bedroom has a king size select comfort-sleep number bed and the other bedroom has a trundle bed that is set up as two twin beds but can be easily slid together for another king bed. When you proceed up the log spiral staircase you will find the loft that consists of four custom built in twin beds as well as another set of mattresses for an additional bed if needed. There is also a rather large open area in the loft for the kids to play in. If you still need some additional sleeping space, the couch downstairs also has a hid-a-bed built in for backup. So all told the lake home can sleep 10-12 depending... We provide you with two Webber grills, one gas and one charcoal, for you to put on your chef's hat and showcase your grilling skills. But if you are planning on using the charcoal grill please bring your own charcoal as we are not sure what brand everyone likes. There is an old canoe down by the lake with some paddles in it but you will have to bring your own life preservers as we are not sure what size everyone wears. The home has a wrap around porch that views the lake at all angles so that you can watch the kids swimming at the beach or watch the fisherman or boating activities on the lake. You are likely to see many animals such as deer and pheasant while enjoying the scenic views from the south facing porch. The lake itself consists of 335 acres and is roughly a mile long and has Walleye, Northern Pike, Bluegills, Crappies, Perch as well as several other types of fish. If you like you could also take a short drive to the north to visit Glenwood where you can shop or perhaps even stop by Duffy's Roadhouse restaraunt to get what they call Gold Rush Wings that are quite possibly the best wings in the state (and no we do not have a vested interest in Duffy's).
